Day 5 - Travel To Mammoth Cave, KY
Tough travel day 383 miles consumes over
ten hours with the lunch stop and a stop for
food shopping. The time zone change does
not help, we decide to stay on eastern time
which led to some pretty interesting
conversations regarding the schedule.
"Now what time to we get up for caving?" "Is
that eastern, central or watch time?"
We
eventually figured it all out and made all the
necessary adjustments and remained on
"watch time".
Day 6 - Mammoth Cave National Park, KY
Even on "watch time"  we had time for a quick
Scrabble game before our scheduled 4 hour
tour. Mammoth Cave is the world's longest
recorded cave system with more than 365
miles mapped. The nearest competitor is 120
miles in Russia. They think that Mammoth will
eventually reach over 1,000 miles once
completely explored. Our tour, led by NPS
guides lasted 4 hours. We encountered bats,
cave crickets, cave beetles, and tight belly
crawls.
