| This Online Copy of the Aquehonga Tree Identification Pamphlet - is a replica of the hard copy version which is available at the Aquehonga Nature Lodge during normal Summer Camp operation. |
HOW TO USE THIS PAMPHLET
Follow the trail – Start at the “Welcome to Camp Aqehonga” sign, located on the camp entrance road, the trail is concentrated around the water
tower and the Barta house. Use the map to follow the trail as outlined. The trail is marked with circular green trail markers and the map shows
approximately where the identified trees are located.
Once you spot a picture on a tree, look for its identification # on the plaque. The number will correspond to a sequential page in this book. On
the page you will find a duplicate picture of the tree leaf and a fact card, which will tell you: How to Identify it, its Habitat, and its Range.
With the fact card and the live tree, it should be easier to learn what you need to look for when you are trying to identify trees.
Looking for specific trees – Find the tree’s identification # in the book. Look for the same # on the map and see approximately where the tree is.
Hike to the spot on the trail and find the picture on the tree. Match the identification #’s to make sure you are in the right place.
REQUIREMENTS: (This pamphlet is intended as an aid to learn the skills; and not to be used as notes during testing; Instructors should make
the final decision.)
First Class # 6: Identify or show evidence of at least ten kinds of native plants found in your community.
Forestry MB # 1: Prepare a field notebook, make a collection, and identify 15 species of trees and wild shrubs in a local forested area. Include
a written description of:
1. Identifying characteristics of leaf, twig, and fruit samples.
2. The habitat in which these trees or shrubs are found.
3. Chief ways each tree or shrub is used by human and wildlife.
4. The forest's successional stage, what its history has been, and what its future is.
Nature MB # 4G Plants:
1. In the field, identify 15 species of wild plants.
2. Collect and label seeds of six plants; OR the leaves of 12 plants.
