Long Trip, 8/27 - 9/1, 2002

Saturday 8/31, A 1/2 hour (if you don't miss the turn off) from Ohiopyle, Laurel Caverns is one of two catacomb-type caves in the U.S.. 3.5 miles of passage makes this P.A.'s largest natural cave. From atop Chestnut Ridge the park offers a spectacular seven county view. We took the 3 hour, high adventure spelunking trip. With multiple flashlights, helmet, and warm, old clothes, (52 degrees is the year 'round temperature), we emerged caked in mud, soaked with water and exhausted from the climb. We had a terrific time, thanks to our guide, George.

Caving, the challenge: The physical, treacherous, and pitch dark descent into the cave. Compounded by the special challenges set by your guide: 90 degree headfirst downward belly slide through a narrow opening, Climbing a major ridge with the aid of an ever moving rope ladder, A 30 foot climb/crawl up a steep incline and a similar descent in pitch darkness. (lights were purposely turned off)
