Parent Participation
YES ! The Troop 17 is run by adult volunteers. The Troop has been in existence for 90 years due the generosity of adult volunteers. There would be no program without the support and help of parents.
The time spent by parents can vary and be very flexible, yet critical to the success of the Troop. You can be an Assistant Leader, a Committee Member, an Instructor, a Designated Driver, or just be around to lend a hand whenever possible or needed.
1._ASSISTANT LEADER
The Troop adult leaders are volunteers. As an assistant leader you will assist the Scoutmaster in supervising and coordinating all facets of the Troop's program. This is a uniformed position, and critical to the program since the Boy Scout rules require a minimum of two adult leaders to accompany the scouts on their activities.
What about Training?
Fast Start: A two hour training tape that may be borrowed from the Troop.
Basic Training: A one day training course conducted by volunteers in each borough.
2. _COMMITTEE MEMBER
The Troop committee is the Troop's board of directors. It ensures quality leadership, provides meeting place, advises scoutmaster on policies, supports leaders in carrying out program, responsible for finances, maintenance of troop equipment, and serves on board of reviews for rank advancements. Jobs are divided among the committee members. Meets on a regular basis (once a month or once every two months).
3. _INSTRUCTOR/TRAINER
If you have special training and qualifications in a certain field you can help supervise/train the boy instructors in that particular or a related skill. Examples: First Aid, Climbing, Swimming, Cooking …
4. _DESIGNATED DRIVER
Transportation is a key issue since we run an aggressive outdoor program. Adults are needed to drive the scouts to their activities. The leaders' vehicles can only handle a limited amount of scouts at one time. You do not have to drive to every event. If enough parents volunteer this can be done on rotating basis. Every other trip Or every third trip for example..
5. _LENDING HAND
For those who cannot commit up front to specific jobs but are willing to help on a moments notice when the troop needs help.
