BECOMING A SCOUT
The Scouting program is not for everyone. Therefore, at Troop 17 we encourage interested boys to visit several troop meetings and if
possible participate in a few activities, including a camping trip before finally joining.
This will allow you and your son to meet and get to know the other boys and the adult leaders of the troop. We want you to be comfortable with
the environment, the other participants, and find out what the program is really all about. This will also allow time for him to learn and
complete the Scout joining requirements.
To join and become a Scout your son must:
• Be 11-17, earned the Arrow of Light Award, or completed the fifth grade.
• Submit a BSA application and health history signed by parent or guardian.
• Repeat The Pledge Allegiance.
• Demonstrate the Scout Sign, Salute, and Handshake.
• Demonstrate Tying the Square Knot.
• Understand and agree to live by the Scout Oath, Law, Motto, Slogan, and the Outdoor Code.
• Describe the Scout Badge
• Complete The Pamphlet exercises with his parent or guardian.
• Participate in a Scoutmaster’s Conference.
Scout Oath On my honor I will do my best To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; To help other people at all times; To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.
